Traffic travelling between Payneham and Port Rush Road has been blocked in both directions after a 20-metre-tall gum tree, believed to be 80 years old, fell earlier this morning.

Thankfully no one was injured as a result of the falling tree.

Two commuters travelling northeast along Payneham Road have been left having to find other ways to get to work, when their cars were badly damaged in the accident.

Traffic in the area has been diverted to Magill and Northeast roads, which is expected to be the case for at least the next two hours.

In a roadside interview, Spokesperson for the Norwood, Payneham, and St Peters Council stated, “the tree was protected by local heritage by-laws, but we believe it had been affected by termites which have been causing a number of other trees to fall in past months”.

Clean-up crews have stated it will take until tomorrow morning for the road to be completely cleared.

One lane of both roads affected will be reopened as soon as possible.
